Güéjar Sierra is a Spanish town and municipality, belonging to the province of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia.
It is located in the southeastern part of the Vega de Granada, being one of the fifty-two entities that make up the Metropolitan Area of Granada. It borders the municipalities of La Peza, Lugros, Jérez del Marquesado, Trevélez, Capileira, Dílar, Monachil, Pinos Genil, Dúdar and Quéntar.
History
With a historical origin almost parallel to that of the capital of Granada itself, the municipality of Güéjar Sierra begins its historical journey already at the time of Roman occupation, although it is considered to have a Muslim origin with the subsequent Christian conquest. well defined by these occupations, its urban structure being that of three well-defined neighborhoods:
El Barrio Alto or Barrio del Fuerte as it was known in Christian times, which is a neighborhood with direct access to the town through the Vega de Granada and is reached directly to the farmsteads of Güéjar.In Muslim times the occupation of the Barrio de la Fuente or Alquería de en Medio stands out, authentic population centers that in the 1570 uprising of the Arab people this farmhouse was established as the main population nucleus, and would be in the repopulation of the Christian era when the neighborhood began to be known under the name of Barrio de la Iglesia, one of the Low Neighborhoods, who make it up together or to the Alquería Baja renamed in Christian times as Barrio de la Moraleda or del Peñón.
